Center membership drive a success. I am happy to report that our membership campaign is seeing some very positive results.

In October, we had about 160 members, but by the end of January, we had 215 members, a 34 percent increase.

To help us reach our goal of doubling membership, we have extended the campaign. If you are not yet a member, why not drop by the Center or attend one of our many functions? We hope the visit will encourage you to join.

We have been successful in raising funds for special projects, but general Center operations require member revenues. Help us continue to offer the services and programs we all need.

The Living Room. The founder and first staff member of the Center's new Living Room project, Jimmy Amato, died in January. He had been ill with AIDS, but worked as staff until late November. His tireless efforts inspired an entire community to provide a much needed program. He will be missed.

Board retreat. Thanks to a $4,800 grant from the Cleveland Foundation, the board of trustees has undertaken an evaluation of the Center's mission and purpose.

With the help of Allerhand & Associates, organization development and management consultants, the board held a daylong retreat in January focusing on the present organization and its future.

Additional retreats will deal with implementing the suggested changes and conducting an annual evaluation. Center members participated in this process by completing a needs survey during a general membership meeting.

It is hoped the evaluation will improve existing activities and help us plan for the future.

Newsletter. The long-awaited Center newsletter has finally made it into print. It highlights Center programs and activities and will be mailed to members along with their complimentary copy of the Gay People's Chronicle, a new Center membership benefit. While we plan to mail the newsletter twice a year, we hope to issue it bimonthly or monthly.

Plain Dealer features Living Room. The Living Room was featured in a fullpage Plain Dealer article in January. The article was prompted by our press release announcing the award of a $28,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for Living Room operation.

While the article was great general publicity, it also had some unexpected, positive results. Many diverse groups and individuals were moved to make Living Room donations. Some of the donors had been personally touched by AIDS and wanted to do something in tribute to a loved one. The funds will be put to good use. Their thoughtfulness is most appreciated.

The Center is a multi-service, nonprofit agency providing programs, meeting space, awareness and advocacy for lesbians and gays throughout Greater Cleveland. It is located at 1418 W. 29th St., Cleveland. Mailing address: Box 6177, Cleveland, OH 44101. Open daily 7-10 p.m. Hotline: 216-781-6736 daily 3-10 p.m. Administrative offices: 216-522-
